Gyms

Gym types, badges, leaders and the teams that defend a gym.

The gym type

Every community's gym has one of the 17 types, from Normal to Steel. A new town's type is picked from its community's id, so it never changes on its own. The community owner can change it at any time from the gym banner. Changing the type also changes the town's wild Pokémon and its weather.

The leader

The community owner is the gym leader. When a trainer challenges the gym:

  • If the leader is online and free, they get a challenge and have 30 seconds to accept. They then battle with their own party, with 10 second turns, like a PvP battle that also allows items.
  • If the leader is away, busy, declines or lets the 30 seconds run out, the gym's trainers take over: "The Gym Leader is unavailable. The gym's trainers accept your challenge!" No turn timer.

Leaders cannot challenge their own gym.

The gym's team

When the gym's trainers defend, they field one of two teams, whichever is stronger:

  • The leader's own top three: the three highest-level Pokémon in the leader's party, fully healed.
  • A team of the gym's type scaled to the challenger's badge count, so a gym is a fair fight for whoever walks in. It has 2 Pokémon plus one for every two badges (up to 5), at rising levels, with the strongest Pokémon of the type that fits the top level as the ace.

Winning a badge

Beat the gym, against the leader or the team, and you earn:

  • the town's badge, shown on your trainer card,
  • ₽100 × the top level of the team you beat,
  • 200 points.

You can only earn each badge once. Losing a gym challenge is a blackout: half your money is gone and your party wakes up healed.

Choosing a type as owner

A town's type shapes everything about it. Some ideas:
