TapIn Pokémon

Wild pools

Which Pokémon appear where, how often and at what level.

When encounters happen

While TapIn is open and visible, a wild Pokémon appears every 2 to 5 minutes, picked at random each time. You will not get one while you are already in a battle, or when wild encounters are turned off in your settings. On a live page the battle opens as a side panel next to the stage; everywhere else it fills the screen.

Where they come from

  • On a community's pages (the community, its members, its chat, its lives), wild Pokémon come from that town's pool: 8 to 12 species of the gym's type, plus 2 or 3 common Pokémon of other types that wandered in. A town's pool is fixed for its type, so a Fire town always has the same Fire Pokémon.
  • Everywhere else they come from the global pool: every species except legendaries.

Legendary Pokémon never appear in wild pools. They come from legendary events and flyovers only.

At each time of day only the species active at that hour can appear; see Time of day.

How rare

RarityWeight
Common50
Uncommon25
Rare10
Very rare2

A pool's species are drawn by these weights: a common Pokémon is 25 times more likely than a very rare one.

What level

Wild Pokémon grow with you. The game takes your party's average level, subtracts 3 and adds a random −2 to +2, then keeps the result between 2 and 60 and inside the species' natural range. A species only appears once your party is strong enough for it: evolved Pokémon start around their evolution level, so you will meet Pidgey long before Pidgeot.

About 1 in 512 wild Pokémon is shiny.
