Catching
Balls, where they work, and what happens after the click.
You can throw a ball at any wild Pokémon, including legendary Pokémon in legendary events and flyovers. Pokémon that belong to another trainer (in PvP, gyms, tournaments and Team Rocket battles) cannot be caught.
Throwing a ball takes your turn. The ball shakes up to three times. If it breaks open, the Pokémon is still there and the battle goes on. Three shakes and a click: gotcha.

After the catch
- The Pokémon joins your party, or goes to the PC Box if the party is full.
- You can give it a nickname straight away.
- It keeps the HP and status it had, and you become its original trainer. The ball, the place, its level and the time of day are recorded.
- If it was holding an item, the item goes into your bag.
- You earn points for its rarity, plus 20 for a new Pokédex entry. See Leaderboard.
Tips
- Lower its HP first. A Pokémon at 1 HP is roughly three times easier to catch than one at full health.
- Sleep and freeze help the most, paralysis, burn and poison help a little.
- False Swipe never knocks a Pokémon out: it always leaves at least 1 HP.
- A Great Ball is worth it for anything rarer than common; an Ultra Ball for starters and very rare finds.
